ECA student wins 2nd Mock Trial Journalist State Championship
ECA Senior Aileen Ukwuoma recently won her second consecutive Mock Trial Journalist State Championship and has qualified for the national competition. Congratulations Aileen!
Since 1978, the Gene Franchini New Mexico High School Mock Trial Program has helped New Mexico teens gain an understanding of the legal system by providing opportunities for school teams to participate in academic competitions where players assume attorney and witness roles in a court case. Coaches help students develop questioning, critical thinking and oral advocacy skills. Teams are made up of three witnesses, three attorneys and a timekeeper on each side (prosecution/plaintiff and defense) of the case. Working with their mentors, the students prepare opening statements, direct and cross-examinations and closing arguments. The cases are presented before judges and panels of “jurors,” where the teams are judged on their demonstrated knowledge and presentation skills, rather than on the legal merits of the issue at hand. In addition to students who participate as lawyers, witnesses and timekeepers there are courtroom artist and courtroom journalist contests.
March 11, 2024: Last week Cosmetology collaborated with EMT to create a real life feel of emergency scenarios. Special shout out to the ECA Cosmetology students who gave up their lunch to participate and prepare the model with wounds and lacerations.
March 11, 2024: Last week our Cosmetology students collaborated with our Nursing students to practice their skills - Nursing students received a free facial!
Congratulations to Kaitlyn Eberman, Kevin Huang and Aileen Ukwuoma! Their performance on the Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT) has entered them into the 2024 National Merit Scholarship Program!
From more than 1.3 Million program entrants, each of these students is among the 50,000 highest-scoring participants who will be recognized as either a Semifinalist or Commended Student in the fall.
Way to go Kaitlyn, Kevin and Aileen! We know that you work hard and take your academics seriously and it's great to see you recognized for this. We wish you luck in the next qualifying term.
March 13, 2023: Students in the CEC Chinese language program participated in cultural exchange activities with students from Hualien City in Taiwan. At 7 pm New Mexico time, 15 CEC students met virtually with 20 Hualien Senior High students in their morning class at 9 am Taiwan time. Students in the two cities used Google Jamboard to introduce Albuquerque and Hualien, then all students were divided into groups and chatted in both English and Chinese for three 10-minute sessions. Students from both cities enjoyed this meeting and will participate in a second meeting in April. The event was featured in local newspapers in Hualien.
