nursing logoCEC's Licensed Practical Nursing Program is a unique high school Practical Nursing Program, with national and state accreditation that prepares high school graduates for entry-level practical nursing practice.   Please see the LPN section of our website for more information about the program.

Two-Year Program – 5 Semesters

Junior Year

  • Fall semester – Nursing Science 1

*For Senior Students – if possible do not take a 4th period class at your comprehensive high school. This allows you to spend more time in clinical on Monday and Tuesdays.

All Didactic classes earn 1.0 high school elective credits per semester. Labs and clinical earn 1.0 high school credits per semester; in the last semester clinical earns 0.5 credits. Nutrition for Nurses earns 1.0 credit. Total credits = 10.5 HS elective credits.


Applying to the CEC Practical Nursing program

Application Requirements:

  • Complete CEC PN application and submit by March 3, 2023
  • Provide three reference letters from Math, English and Science teachers
    • Download the teacher reference letter form ( Fillable PDF / Printable PDF / Word ) and give to your teacher
    • Reference letters must come directly from the teacher and are due no later than April 6, 2023
  • You will be contacted via email by March 17th if you meet all entrance requirements and will be invited to interview.  Be sure to include your PERSONAL email address on the application.  
  • Interviews will take place on April 3rd.

Prerequisites:

  • Must attend a comprehensive APS High School, APS School of Choice, or an APS Charter School
  • 3.0 cumulative GPA
  • Must be 16 years old by the first day of September in the year you begin the program.  
  • Must be capable of performing Essential Functions (see web site for information)
  • Must have two (2) semesters of Biology with a minimum of a “B” each semester
  • Must have two (2) years of Mathematics with a minimum of “B” each year

Additional Information: Once accepted into the program, the student will be expected to obtain:

  • Access to internet
  • Access to a printer with ink and paper
  • Electronic reader/lap top
  • Reliable transportation to CEC for AM session and to all clinical sites regardless of session
  • Uniforms/ nursing shoes
  • Medical release to perform Essential Functions
  • Primary TB test
  • Annual influenza vaccine
  • COVID vaccine (at least the first 2 vaccinations and 1 booster)
  • Up-to-date immunizations
  • CPR certification – basic life support for healthcare providers
  • $150.00 lab fee due at the beginning of the first semester to cover the cost of ATI on-line preparation for nursing course work, and $65.00 lab fee due at the beginning of each subsequent semester, for a total of $410.00
  • Purchase of resource books as needed.  
    • Medication administration
    • Care plans
    • Pathophysiology
  • To participate in the clinical portion of the course, students
    • Must be fingerprinted by the Veterans Medical Center
    • Must be fingerprinted for NM Department of Health
    • Must be drug tested by a SAMSHA certified laboratory
    • These requirements will be scheduled during the end of the first semester of the program
  • Clinical settings require Social Security numbers and proof of citizenship.

  • Interview Notifications sent via email by March 17, 2023
  • Interviews on April 3, 2023
  • Acceptance letters sent via email by April 24, 2023
  • Mandatory Parent Meetings scheduled in June
  • CPR classes scheduled at CEC in late June or early July
