Prerequisites: none
Additional requirements: Students are required to participate in ALL aspects of hands-on peer-to-peer practical experiences as part of this course, ex: shampooing, styling, facials, scalp treatments, etc. With a registration fee of $25, 1st year students who are 11th/12th graders and 16 years of age or older can earn up to 100 hours toward licensure through the NM Board of Barbers and Cosmetologists with successful completion of the course.

If you are interested in your own personal grooming or in being a cosmetologist, barber, nail technician, esthetician or make-up artist, then this class is for you. In this class, you will learn:
- Job skills and salon management
- Shampooing and hair-styling
- Manicuring and pedicuring
- Facials and scalp treatments
- Nail tips
- Theatrical and special-effects make-up
- Glamour make-up
- Permanent waving
- Hair coloring
Cosmetology 1 is an introductory program to all phases of cosmetology excluding hair cutting and sculptured nails. The student acquires the basics in shampooing, hairstyling, manicuring and pedicuring, make-up, facials, scalp treatments, nail tips, permanent waving, hair coloring, salon management, and job skills. In addition, the student has many opportunities to reinforce mathematics and literacy concepts and enhance those skills. Skills and knowledge acquired in this course can be applied to the Marketing, Sales, and Service, Education and Training, Hospitality and Tourism, and Human Services/ Personal Care Services career clusters and their respective pathways.
Additional Course Information: NOTE: With a registration fee of $25, Juniors and seniors 16 or older enrolled in the Cosmetology 1 course may earn up to one hundred (100) hours for the year that may go towards State Board Licensure, depending upon attendance. The hours earned will be registered through the NM State Board of Barbers and Cosmetologists. The student will receive an official transcript with the exact hours earned after completing the CEC Cosmetology class.
Students may not take Cosmetology, Barbering and Esthetics concurrently in the same year. Concurrent classes will not result in double hours earned towards State Board Licensing.

Cosmetology 2 is a more in-depth program that complements Cosmetology 1, excluding hair cutting and sculptured nails. The student acquires more advanced techniques in shampooing, hairstyling, manicuring and pedicuring, facials, scalp treatments, nail tips, permanent waving, salon management, and job skills. In addition, the student has many opportunities to reinforce mathematics and literacy concepts and enhance those skills. Skills and knowledge acquired in this course can be applied to the Marketing, Sales, and Service, Education and Training, Hospitality and Tourism, and Human Services/Personal Care Services career clusters and their respective pathways. Successful completion of this course may lead to opportunities to pursue Advanced Cosmetology, Barbering and Esthetics and other industries in the beauty field.
Additional Course Information: NOTE: Quarterly Job Shadowing (once per 9-week grading period) in Salons/Barber Shops/Spas is a requirement for this course. Shadowing must take place outside of school hours; attendance will be tracked. Students will create a final presentation in May to reflect on their four Job Shadowing experiences.

In this course students will explore, research, understand, and apply all phases of barbering. The student acquires the basics in mock shave or trim beards; style hair whether by hand or mechanical or electrical apparatus; curl, wave permanent wave or chemically relax the hair; give facial and scalp massage or treatments with oils, creams, lotions, or other preparations, either by hand or mechanical appliances; shampoo, bleach, dye, or apply tonics to the hair. In addition, the student has many opportunities to reinforce mathematics and literacy concepts and enhance those skills. This class is primarily 75% hands on practical application and 25% theory. This class emphasizes Career Readiness, where the student can examine career paths and requirements within the Barbering industry. The student will recognize the education, employability skills, training requirements, and opportunities for a career in the barbering and related personal care service fields.

Preferential acceptance given to those who have excellent attendance. Please understand this a hands-on class and attendance is crucial for successful completion of the course.
