In partnership with the Albuquerque Police Department, this course allows students to undergo Police Service Aide training while still in high school. Once accepted, students will be expected to participate fully in all aspects of training, both physical and academic. Good attendance is mandatory. This program is targeted to individuals seriously interested in learning about what it takes to be a law enforcement officer. The program will provide each student with the classroom knowledge and practical skills necessary to perform the duties of a PSA. Areas of study include: the criminal justice system, general law, patrol and traffic investigations. Additionally, students will participate in a physical fitness/tactical training program, and will have the opportunity to experience at least one actual ride-along with an APD officer on patrol. Students will receive hands-on experience in traffic control, report writing, and role playing activities similar to those used to train cadets in the Albuquerque Police Academy.
The two-semester class will be taught by APD personnel who are Police Academy certified instructors. Upon successful completion of the program, students will be recommended for the PSA selection process.
PSA responsibilities consist of enforcing parking laws, investigating misdemeanor offenses, and assisting officers on patrol with traffic accidents. PSAs patrol their assigned area commands in marked city vehicles equipped with emergency equipment and police radios.
Additional Course Information: This is a unique and one-of-a-kind program for students interested in a career in law enforcement. Students will get a certificate of completion from the APD Academy, and once presented to CNM they will receive 7 hours of credit with initial enrollment (6 hrs Criminal Justice & 1 PE credit).

This course meets the requirements set forth by the Fire and Emergency Services Higher Education (FESHE) Initiative.
Wildland Firefighting (FS 1504): Students will gain knowledge in wildland fire standards, techniques and suppression methods associated with various fuel types, weather and topography, as well as fire line references and the techniques associated with wildland structural defense. Students will gain a working knowledge of fire behavior and fire control techniques needed to carry out wildland fire tasks. Successful students receive S-130, S-190, I-100, and L-180 certificates recognized by the National Wildfire Coordination Group (NWCG).
Additional Course Information: CEC’s Fire Science program offers students two foundational courses which upon successful completion of courses and assessments, lead to fire science national certifications. Principles of Emergency Services serves as a prerequisite to completing Firefighting I/II, the basic certification for structural firefighting. The Wildland Firefighting certifications serve as a prerequisite for students to earn their Red Card, on their path to becoming a Hot Shot. If students are interested in a career as a firefighter in New Mexico, taking these two courses may provide students preference in being accepted into Albuquerque Fire Rescue (AFR), an all-hazards fire agency.
