Nursing Assistant Program

CNM/CEC Dual Credit Program

Would you like to enter the heath care job market? Would you like to earn 7 college credits? Nursing Assistants are vital members of the health care team. This one-semester course includes:

• Nursing Assistant Skills
• Basic Anatomy and Physiology and Infection Control
• Emphasis on communication, professionalism and compassion
• Preparation for state Nursing Assistant Certification Exam

Prerequisites

• 2.5 cumulative GPA
• Reading Accuplacer minimum score of 238
• Students must be a Junior or Senior in High School
• Students must be capable of performing physical requirements (see CNM website)
• Students must comply with CNM compliance and background requirements (see CNM website)

Students must first apply on the CEC website for the Nursing Assistant course and then once notified, will receive a detailed letter with directions on how to complete their application and registration for the following courses:

• Health 1001 (1 credit)
• Principles of Nursing Assistant Theory (3 college credits)
• Principles of Nursing Assistant Lab (2 college credits)
• Nursing Assistant Clinical (1 college credit)

Tuition and Fees

Students have approximately $360.00 in fees from CNM that will cover their scrubs (2 sets), stethoscope, CNM ID, badge holder, gait belt, background check, drug screening, Fitt testing, Health 1001, and registration. Students have an additional $25 lab fee for CEC to cover lab supplies, and a $25 contract for CEC issued blood pressure cuffs. The optional Prometric Exam is $110. (Payment plan/scholarships available)

The student will also be required to have reliable transportation to clinical sites.

Upon completion of the Nursing Assistant course, students will have earned 7 college credits and have the opportunity to take their certification exam to become a Certified Nursing Assistant. Nursing Assistant jobs are available in hospitals, long term care facilities, private homes, and outpatient clinics

Course Description

This course emphasizes the roles and responsibilities of the Nursing Assistant. The course provides instruction in patient’s rights, communications with the health team, body structure and function, infection prevention, nutrition, principles of growth and development, safety in healthcare, home health care, and care of the older person.

At the completion of this course the student will be able to:

• Demonstrate understanding of Nursing Assistant roles and responsibilities.
• Demonstrate understanding of basic medical terminology and abbreviations.
• Demonstrate understanding of communications with the health team.
• Demonstrate understanding of basic body structure and function, infection prevention, nutrition, and principles of growth and development.
• Demonstrate understanding of patient’s rights
• Demonstrate understanding of safety in health care
• Exhibit professional behaviors in the classroom setting. These behaviors include (but are not limited to): attendance, attention, appearance, following policy regarding cell phone usage, respect, communication, participation and team work
